Valentina is the odd woman out. She was part of “the Five” when she dated Drew for a couple of years, and she remains friends with the women, but with her traveling schedule as a runway model, it’s impossible to maintain a real relationship. When Valentina attends her cousin’s wedding in LA, she runs into Cesar, who she was a school friend with in Puerto Rico. Cesar is not the young, skinny boy she remembers but a grown man who seems interested in what’s beyond her model appearance. Back in New York, Valentina can’t get him out of her mind, but she also can’t deny the fact that they’re separated by well over a thousand miles. (AMAZON.com)
I totally fell in love with Cesar from the moment he walked into the story. No reason to doubt that Valentina would do the same, especially since they had been friends long before this novella begins. So what if she lives in New York, and he lives in Puerto Rico? I understand how difficult it is to live a life where careers keep a woman and her man thousands of miles apart, but I also believe problems like that can be worked out to a satisfactory end.
As with the other novellas in this series, as a reader I'd like to go one more step, so I'm still hoping Moore will someday write a novel that pulls all of these women--"the Five"--together again, along with the new men in their lives.
Another fun addition to the Alison Creek novella series from one of my favorite authors.

The Daisy Chain -- Heather B. Moore
Welcome to the Aliso Creek Novella Series
Liz, Gemma, Arie, Jess, and Drew have been best friends since creating “the Five” at Aliso Creek High School. But that was over ten years ago, and each is still trying to find that perfect someone…if perfect is even possible.
Actually, Jess Giles does find her perfect match, but since Charlie’s several years older than she, they never have a moment of harmony from his adult kids who protest the marriage. When Charlie dies in a tragic accident, his kids add insult to injury and sue Jess for her share of the inheritance. The only person Jess trusts for financial advice is Charlie’s financial planner, Preston Michaels. Just talking to Preston on the phone makes Jess feel flustered, yet strangely comfortable at the same time, so she puts off meeting him for as long as possible. When Jess has to attend the formal hearing, she’s about to find out if the man she’s been talking to over the phone for several months lives up to the voice that she’s grown attached to.
Like with the other novellas in the series, I was immediately interested in meeting Jess and discovering how her romance would evolve, especially since we learn that she is a widow, only a year apart from her beloved husband. How can her romance already have ended when the story has only begun? But that's where Moore brings readers the perfect balance.
Jess learns that her friendships can support her, no matter how difficult her loss, and her step-children have made life for her this past year. And she also discovers that "the five" and not her only friends.Even though she has never met Preston Michaels in person, Jess has come to rely on his advice, but there's so much more. She loves just talking to him, even though she's afraid their "relationship" will change if they actually meet. When the day comes that she feels forced to attend a court meeting with Charlie's grown children, Jess feels torn--should so attend, or should she make one more excuse not to meet Preston in person. It's a romance, so we all know what will happen, but that doesn't stop us from worrying how it will all work out for Jess.
I highly recommend the entire Aliso Creek novella series for those looking for short, clean romance.

Heart of the Ocean - Heather B. Moore
As a member of author Heather B. Moore's critique group I have had the
opportunity to read this book in the many stages of draft, and every
time the book has gotten better. Now in its publication draft, I can
only say WOW! Despite being familiar with the characters and plot from
my previous readings, this version totally pulled me into the story and I
soon found myself so engaged that I couldn't put it down. I wanted to
be right on the stormy cliffs, thrilled yet terrified of entering the
lighthouse, and anxious to discover not only how the paranormal mystery
played out, but also about the decisions Eliza Robinson would have to
make concerning romance and Jonathan Porter. The story is so compelling,
I'm currently reading it for a second time, engaged by the nuances and
foreshadowing I didn't catch on previous readings. If you love a good
ghost story, or are in the mood for a romance, Heart of the Ocean is the
book for you.

Third Time's the Charm - Heather B. Moore
Liz, Gemma, Arie, Jess, and Drew have been best friends since creating
"the Five" at Aliso Creek High School. But that was over ten years ago,
and each is still trying to find that perfect someone . . . if perfect
is even possible.
In fact, Liz Carlson will settle for a normal man. A normal man with a job, that is. Married twice, then divorced twice, Liz had her rose-colored glasses fall off and shatter on the ground a long time ago. Her main focus now is raising her six-year-old daughter and surviving long days at work on her feet as a hairdresser. When Sloane Branden answers her call for help, quite literally, Liz doesn't even give him a second glance. She has sworn off dating for as many years as it takes, and it seems that Sloane has done the same after his own tumultuous marriage. But when Liz realizes that Sloane defies every stereotypical deadbeat she has dated, she might just find room in her heart and discover the third time's the charm.
In this first novella of a planned series, Heather Moore introduces us to Liz, a woman who wants the same thing most of us do, a relationship that is based on the honest truth. But Liz has already been burned, not once, but twice, and is afraid to grow too near anyone again, especially in light of what another romance might mean to her relationship with her six-year-old daughter. Having sworn off men, of course the first thing that happens is that she meets the perfect guy--rich, handsome, and ready to come to her rescue. The only catch--he's got an ex-wife who seems to still be in love with him, and Liz knows the woman would get in the way, if there were a way to get in to. Determined to keep her own distance from Sloane, Liz finds herself drawn closer to him the more she tries to pull away. And that's where the fun begins.
An absolutely delightful and clean read that will satisfy romance fans, and leave them wanting more. As a matter of fact, although the novella came to the perfect conclusion, I'm hoping Moore will someday revisit this couple and answer some of the questions I still have about their future together, and what happens to the nasty, mean ex-wife!
(For the purist fans of Moore's genre historicals, know this novella is not what she writes for the Utah market, but nothing within it will prove more than mild to the general reader.)
